42 riders signed on at Joe Dalys in Dundrum to ride the Orwell Midlands 300km Audax on Sunday 6th April. It was nippy enough before dawn as they set off. The route is straightforward: Dundrum - Mountrath - Birr - Athlone - Dundrum and must be completed inside a timelimit of 20hrs. There is just one significant climb, the Wolftrap over the Slieve Blooms between Mountrath and Birr.
It was a glorious sunny day, but there was a stiff headwind for the last 130km after the turn in Athlone.
The first riders were back in Dundrum for tea, while the last riders were home with 3 hours to spare.

Here is an edited version of some old advice for doing a 300.
"Hi all, it's great that people are being audacious enough to consider taking on a 300, and if there's a gang of first timers doing it there will probably never find a better time to take the plunge.
Anyone who has ridden 200k in a day can do a 300, given the right day and route, but you can give yourself the best chance of success by choosing the time of year to maximise your fitness and give you the most hours of daylight. Going purely on hours of available daylight late June or early July is your best bet …, "
The calendar event is on…
